Guide to Positive Reinforcement on the Pitch
By Chris Behrens, team writer for the online
soccer shop, SoccerPro, where he always makes sure his teams look their best in SoccerPro's top of the line
Soccer Uniforms!
Getting yelled at by a teammate can be one of the most frustrating
feelings a player can experience. We’ve all experienced it at one time
or another. Rather than yell back, why not make a positive change for
the team?
1). Encourage Players After Failure
One bad pass followed by one bad comment from a teammate can have
horrendous consequences on the team as a whole. Instead of coming down
on a teammate, encourage the teammate to correct their mistake. Show a
positive frame of mind even when things aren’t going the teammate’s way.
A simple “Keep going out there, you’ll get it next time”, “Good effort”,
or “Nice idea” goes a long way. Having a player in a positive frame of
mind is key to the player bouncing back after a mistake instead of
dwelling.
2). Work Hard to Counteract a Bad Outcome
So your keeper just made a dire mistake and now you are down 2-1 with
five minutes remaining? Don’t put your head down or yell! Come back and
work hard for your team! Positive reinforcement on the field does not
always have to be verbal communication. Putting forth 110% effort is
contagious to the rest of your team. Give everything you have to get
back into the game. Your teammates will follow suit.
3). Become a Leader
To be a leader on the pitch, you must be vocal and lead by example. Work
hard. Everyone leads in a different way. Sharing your leadership vision
helps your vision grow and your leadership develop. Play to your team’s
strengths and remind your teammates to do the same. Build your
teammate’s confidence through encouragement and praise all the time so
others can play at their best. Even if you are not on the pitch,
positive reinforcement from the sidelines is typically appreciated from
teammates on the field. Be vocal.
Positive reinforcement is an active process. You must practice and go
out of your way to ensure a positive feeling for your team. Praise and
encourage your teammates to help build and maintain confidence
throughout a game.
Coaches please note!!!!!!
+++++++++Changes in the
Travel Permit Policy++++++++++
Recently US Youth Soccer has changed the travel permit policy towards
its members. These changes on the MYSA website.
If you are traveling to a
US-Youth Soccer Sanctioned event, you will need the following:
- Fill out the
Application to Travel Form
- Include the Application to Host from the tournament you are attending
* Also, for travel outside of Region 2, the cost for the Travel Permit
will be $15 beginning January 1, 2010 (Travel to a sanctioned event
within Region 2 is free).
For Non-Sanctioned travel, there are two different forms that can be
used depending on what the tournament/event coordinator requires.
If the coordinator requires
JUST notification of travel, then you will fill out the form found here:
Non-Sanctioned US Youth Soccer Travel
If the coordinator requires
more information, such as the birth dates for the players attending,
then you will fill out the form found here:
Team Player Form
* Also, for travel to a non-sanctioned US Youth Soccer event, there will
be a $25 processing fee beginning December 7, 2010.
The entire U.S. Youth Soccer Travel Policy can be found on the MYSA
website through this
link. If you have any questions, please contact Jake Griesenauer at
ed@mysa.org.
KC
Metro League has had a rule
for several years of NO
WARMUP IN PENALTY AREA.
Starting this season the
coach will get a YELLOW
CARD for violating this rule.
Please be aware of this and
prevent hassles by not doing
anything in the penalty area
for warmup. Thanks in
advance for your
cooperation.

Codes of Conduct
The
Board of Directors of MYSA and
Raytown Soccer Club are concerned
about the conduct of all coaches and
parents during games at all levels,
from recreational to premier. We
want to ensure that games are fair,
positive and enjoyable experiences
for all of the children and adults
involved. A soccer game should be
friendly and unifying – a spirited
social and athletic occasion for
players, coaches, referees and
spectators.
To clarify expectations of coach
conduct, we jointly expect all
coaches to conform to the following
codes of conduct:
Coaches Code of Conduct
Players and Spectators Code of
Conduct
